What goes on an estimate

  • Who it is from and who it is for
  • An estimate number and date
  • Each item or task with a quantity and rate
  • Tax, any discount, and the estimated total
  • The assumptions behind the number, such as access, materials, or scope
  • How long the estimate is good for

Say what could change the price

An estimate is a best guess, so the notes matter more than the numbers. Name what could move the price, such as hidden damage, change orders, or material costs, and say how you will tell the customer before going over. That one paragraph prevents most disputes.

Frequently asked questions

Is this estimate generator free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark, and nothing is stored. It runs in your browser; print the estimate or choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.

What is the difference between an estimate and a quote?

An estimate is an approximate price that can change. A quote is a fixed price you commit to. Use the quote template when you want to lock the number in.

Can the final bill be higher than the estimate?

Sometimes, but rules vary by state and trade, and some places cap how far a final bill can exceed a written estimate. Say in the notes what could change the price and agree to changes in writing. This is not legal advice.

Can I turn an estimate into an invoice?

Yes. Copy the same line items into the invoice generator and update any amounts that changed. Keep the estimate number on the invoice.
