How far back U.S. Bank statements go
U.S. Bank keeps up to seven years of statements available in online banking and the app.
You can also order copies from the same Statements screen. U.S. Bank shows any fee before you confirm the order.
U.S. Bank verification letter
A U.S. Bank verification letter, sometimes called a bank reference letter, confirms that you hold an account, when it was opened, and sometimes its balance. Banks usually prepare these through a banker rather than as a download, so the quickest route is a U.S. Bank branch.
Bring a photo ID and tell the banker who the letter is for and exactly what it needs to say, such as the open date or current balance. If you cannot get to a branch, call U.S. Bank customer service, but allow a few business days if the letter is mailed.
Before you go, ask whether a recent statement will do. Many landlords accept the last two or three statements instead of a letter.
U.S. Bank proof of funds letter
A U.S. Bank proof of funds letter is a verification letter that focuses on your available balance, usually for a home purchase, a large deposit, or an investor. Request it at a branch or through customer service, and say which accounts to include and the date the balance should be shown as of.
Most recipients only accept proof of funds dated within the last 30 to 60 days, so ask for it close to when you need it. Our free proof of funds letter generator can help you draft what the recipient is asking for.
Statement, letter, or income report: which to send
People asking for a U.S. Bank statement usually want proof of one of three things: that the account is yours, how much is in it, or how much you earn. Send the document that answers their actual question.
| Document | Where it comes from | What it shows | How fast | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank statement | You download it | Every transaction and the balance for one month | Minutes | Most rental applications and loan files |
| Bank verification letter | A banker prepares it | That the account exists, its open date, sometimes the balance | Same day to a few business days | Visas, some leases, employers, vendors |
| Proof of funds letter | A banker prepares it | Available balance as of a date | Same day to a few business days | Home purchases, large deposits, investors |
| Bank-connected income report | Built from a read-only bank connection | Recurring deposits, estimated monthly income, balances | About 5 minutes | Showing income without sending every transaction |
Does U.S. Bank work with Plaid?
Yes. U.S. Bank connects to Plaid, the service most budgeting, lending, and income apps use to read bank data. Search for U.S. Bank in the bank list, sign in, and choose which accounts to share. Your login goes to U.S. Bank, not to the app you are connecting, and you may be sent to U.S. Bank’s own sign-in page to approve access.
If a connection fails, it is usually because a security code timed out, and starting again normally fixes it. You can see and remove every app you have connected through Plaid at my.plaid.com.
Sending a U.S. Bank statement to a landlord or lender
Send the PDF you downloaded, not screenshots, and send only the months they ask for. Two or three recent statements are typical for a rental application. Lenders often want two full months with every page, including blank ones.
A statement shows every purchase you made that month. If you would rather share a summary, you can connect your U.S. Bank account and create an income report from your bank deposits. It shows recurring deposits and an estimated monthly income, and it comes straight from the bank, so the person reading it does not have to wonder whether a PDF was edited.
Reviewing statements from an applicant? Our bank statement checker walks through the signs of an altered statement, and you can ask applicants to connect their bank instead of uploading files.
