The formulas
- Adding VAT: VAT = net × rate, gross = net + VAT
- Removing VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate), VAT = gross − net
Example. A net price of $1,000 at 20% VAT: VAT is $200 and gross is $1,200. A gross price of $1,200 at 20% comes back to $1,000 net and $200 VAT.
Things to check
- Standard VAT rates differ by country, and many have reduced rates for some goods. Enter the rate that applies to what you are selling.
- Net means before VAT, gross means after. Invoices usually show net, VAT, and gross as separate lines.
- The United States does not have VAT. Its equivalent is sales tax, which is charged at the point of sale; see the sales tax calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by the VAT rate as a decimal and add it. At 20%, multiply by 0.20, or multiply the net price by 1.20 for the gross.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, divide by 1.20. Do not just subtract 20% of the gross.
Is the amount shown in dollars?
The numbers are just numbers. The calculator formats them in dollars, but the math is the same in any currency.
