How overtime pay is calculated
Regular pay is hours up to the weekly threshold multiplied by the regular hourly rate. Overtime pay is hours above that threshold multiplied by the regular hourly rate and your chosen multiplier.
For example, 45 hours at $20 per hour, with overtime after 40 hours at 1.5×, gives $800 in regular pay plus $150 in overtime pay: $950 before deductions.
Which settings should I use?
The default of 40 hours and 1.5× reflects the federal baseline for covered, nonexempt employees. Exemptions, state rules, daily overtime, bonuses, multiple pay rates, and employment agreements can change the calculation. This tool models a single hourly rate and weekly threshold, and does not determine eligibility for overtime.
See the U.S. Department of Labor’s FLSA guidance for the federal rules. Use your actual applicable rate and rules when checking payroll.
