Keep 52 if time off is paid
Paid at 1.5× the hourly rate
How to convert hourly pay to salary
- Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks worked per year
- Overtime adds hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours per week × weeks worked
- Monthly = annual ÷ 12, biweekly = annual ÷ 26, weekly = annual ÷ 52
- Salary to hourly = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks worked per year)
Example. At $25 an hour for 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, you earn $52,000 a year: $4,333.33 a month, $2,000 every two weeks, and $1,000 a week. A quick shortcut is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros, since 40 × 52 is 2,080 hours, close to 2,000.
Quick conversions at 40 hours a week
- $15 an hour is $31,200 a year, or $2,600 a month
- $20 an hour is $41,600 a year, or $3,466.67 a month
- $25 an hour is $52,000 a year, or $4,333.33 a month
- $30 an hour is $62,400 a year, or $5,200 a month
- $40 an hour is $83,200 a year, or $6,933.33 a month
- $50 an hour is $104,000 a year, or $8,666.67 a month
- These are gross amounts before taxes and deductions. Paid time off counts as weeks worked, so keep 52 weeks if your vacation and holidays are paid, and lower it only for unpaid time off.
Frequently asked questions
How many work hours are in a year?
A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. That is the number most employers use to convert between hourly pay and salary.
How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. For a 40-hour week, divide by 2,080. A $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour.
Should I count vacation weeks?
Count them if they are paid. Salary and hourly comparisons usually assume 52 paid weeks. If you take two weeks off unpaid, use 50 weeks.
How is overtime calculated?
Under federal law, non-exempt employees earn 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Enter your typical overtime hours per week and the calculator adds them at time and a half.
Is this before or after taxes?
Before. These are gross figures, the amount landlords and lenders usually ask for. Take-home pay is lower after federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and benefits.
