Gig Income: Definition & Example

What Is Gig Income?
Gig income is money earned from short-term, task-based work, often through apps such as rideshare, delivery, or freelance marketplaces, rather than from a single employer.
What does gig income mean?
Gig workers are usually independent contractors. They are paid per ride, delivery, task, or project, often weekly or on demand, and they typically receive 1099 forms rather than W-2s.
Gig income tends to vary week to week and is often spread across several platforms. There are no traditional pay stubs, and platform earnings summaries show gross fares before platform fees, mileage, and other costs.
Deposit history is one of the more practical ways to see gig income, because payouts from each platform arrive as recognizable deposits over time. Averaging over several months helps smooth out busy and slow weeks.
Gig income example
A driver works for two rideshare apps and one delivery app. Over six months, her bank shows weekly payouts from all three, ranging from $620 to $1,340 per week and averaging about $3,900 per month in total deposits.
