Plaid doesn't publish a price list. Its pricing page lists plans, not dollar amounts, and its billing docs say you only see per-product rates after you apply for Production access.

Here's the thing most pricing guides miss, though: **Plaid's price isn't the hard part.** Pay as You Go has no minimum and no contract, and the per-connection fees are reasonable. What stops most people is everything that comes before the first charge: creating a developer account, accepting Plaid's terms, applying for and getting approved for Production access, filling out company and security profiles, and writing code against an API.

This guide covers both. First, how Plaid pricing works. Then what it actually takes to get set up, and the shortcut if all you need is an income report.

## The short answer on Plaid pricing

- **Sandbox is free**, with unlimited fake test data.
- **The Trial plan is free** for new US and Canadian teams, with real bank data but a cap of 10 connected accounts.
- **Pay as You Go** has no minimum and no contract. You pay standard rates per product and per connected account, and you see those rates on the last page of the Production application.
- **Growth** adds a 12-month commitment in exchange for lower rates and support.
- **Custom (Scale)** is for high-volume businesses and unlocks products the other plans don't offer.

Third-party procurement data (Vendr, for example) puts Plaid Transactions at roughly $0.30 to $0.60 per connection, depending on volume and contract. That's a ballpark. Your rate is whatever your Plaid agreement says.

## Plaid's four plans

| Plan | Commitment | Who it's for |
|------|-----------|--------------|
| **Trial** | None, free | Testing Plaid with real data, up to 10 connected accounts |
| **Pay as You Go** | Month to month | Individual developers and early-stage businesses |
| **Growth** | 12 months, minimum spend | Small and mid-size teams that want discounts and support |
| **Custom / Scale** | Annual, higher minimums | High-volume or regulated businesses |

Your plan also decides which products you can use. Plaid's dedicated income reports (Plaid Check's Base Report and Income Insights) aren't available on Pay as You Go at all.

## How Plaid bills

- **One-time fee per connected account:** Auth, Identity, and most Income products.
- **Monthly subscription per connected account:** Transactions, Liabilities, Investments. The fee runs until you delete the connection through the API.
- **Per request:** Balance, refresh endpoints, Identity Match, and Asset Report PDFs.

For a landlord, that usually works out to well under a dollar per applicant. The price really is fine. The problem is getting to the point where you can be charged at all.

## What it actually takes to get set up on Plaid

Plaid is infrastructure for software companies. There's no "upload a tenant's name and get a report" button. To use it directly, here's the path, drawn from Plaid's own launch checklist:

1. **Create a Plaid Dashboard account** and verify your email.
2. **Accept Plaid's developer terms**, then build and test in Sandbox with fake data.
3. **Apply for Production access.** You describe your company, your use case, and which products you need, then wait for Plaid to approve you. Some products and plans also require a conversation with sales.
4. **Complete your application profile and company profile.** These are required before your users can connect accounts at major banks that use OAuth logins, including Chase, Wells Fargo, and Capital One.
5. **Fill out Plaid's security questionnaire**, also required for many US banks. It asks how you encrypt data, control access, and handle incidents.
6. **Write the integration.** Embed Plaid Link in a website or app, exchange tokens on a server, and store access tokens securely so they're never exposed to the browser.
7. **Handle the edge cases.** That means OAuth redirects on mobile, webhooks, error handling, preventing duplicate connections, and deleting connections when you're done so subscriptions stop.
8. **Get consent right.** You're responsible for giving notice and getting consent under Plaid's End User Privacy Policy, which usually means having your own privacy policy.
9. **Turn raw data into an answer.** Plaid Transactions returns a list of transactions, not an income number. You still have to separate paychecks from transfers, refunds, and Venmo reimbursements, find recurring deposits, and handle gig and self-employed income.

Each step is reasonable for a fintech startup with engineers. For a landlord, a property manager, or someone who needs to show their own income, it's a dead end. Most people stop at step 3.

## Is there a Plaid free tier?

Sort of. Sandbox is free forever, but it only uses fake data. The Trial plan gives you real data for free, but it stops at 10 connected accounts for the life of your team, and you still have to go through most of the setup above to use it. Plaid is always free for consumers. If you're the one connecting your bank to an app, you never pay Plaid anything.

## Can you use Plaid for personal use?

Technically, yes. Plaid's docs say Pay as You Go suits "hobbyist use." But you're still registering as a Plaid customer, accepting its terms, writing code, and managing access tokens yourself. If your "personal use" is checking one applicant's income, or producing an income report about yourself for a landlord or lender, writing software is the long way around.

## The easy way: Plaid-powered income reports with zero setup

If you looked up Plaid because you want bank-based income verification, you don't need a Plaid account at all.

[Income Checker](/) is built on Plaid and has already done every step above: the approval, the security review, the integration, and the income analysis. Here's what you do:

1. **Sign up** with email or Google.
2. **Send your applicant a link**, or open it yourself.
3. **They connect their bank** through the same Plaid Link screen used by Venmo, Chime, and most banking apps.
4. **You get a finished report** in minutes showing estimated monthly income, detected recurring deposits, deposit consistency, and balances.

No developer account, no Production application, no approval wait, no security questionnaire, no code.

| | Plaid direct | Income Checker |
|---|---|---|
| Accept developer terms and get approved | Required | Not needed |
| Company profile and security questionnaire | Required | Not needed |
| Developer or coding skills | Required | Not needed |
| Income calculation | You build it | Included |
| Ending connections after use | Your code must do it | Automatic. Access tokens are deleted right after the data fetch. |
| Time to first report | Weeks | Minutes |
| Price | Per-product rates, plus build time | **As low as $5 per report**, no subscription |

Plaid's Pay as You Go plan is great if you're building software. If you just want the report, Income Checker gets you the same Plaid bank connection without any of the setup.

One honest limit: Income Checker reports are transaction-based income analysis, not a credit check, employment verification, or consumer report. They show estimated income and deposit patterns, and the decision stays with you. See [our security page](/security) for how the data is handled.

## When going direct to Plaid makes sense

Building on Plaid yourself is the right call when:

- You're a software company and bank data is a core feature of your product.
- You need Plaid products beyond income, like Auth for ACH payments, Balance checks, or Identity.
- You have engineers to own the integration long term.

If that's not you, see [how Plaid income verification works](/blog/plaid-income-verification) without writing code.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does Plaid cost per month?

There's no flat monthly fee on Pay as You Go. You pay per product and per connected account at rates shown when you apply for Production access. Growth and Custom plans add a minimum spend under an annual contract.

### How do I get Plaid production access?

Create a Plaid Dashboard account, build and test in Sandbox, then submit the Production access request describing your company and use case. To connect to major banks, you also need to complete your application profile, company profile, and security questionnaire.

### Can I use Plaid without coding?

Not directly. Plaid is an API that has to be built into a website or app. To get a Plaid-powered income report without code, use a finished product built on Plaid, like Income Checker.

### Is Plaid free to use?

Sandbox is free with test data, and the Trial plan is free for up to 10 real connected accounts. After that you need a paid plan. Plaid is always free for consumers who connect their own bank accounts.

### What's the easiest way to get a Plaid income report?

Use a finished product built on Plaid. With Income Checker, you send a link, the applicant connects their bank through Plaid, and you get a report in minutes for as little as $5, with no Plaid account or setup.

### Is Income Checker affiliated with Plaid?

Income Checker is an independent company that uses Plaid's API as its bank-data provider. It isn't owned, operated, or endorsed by Plaid. Plaid handles the bank connection, and Income Checker handles the applicant flow, income analysis, and report.
